Travel Tips
  • Keep your cash
, traveler's checks, etc. in different places on your person when you go out - and whether on the move or stationed somewhere, NEVER keep all your cash in one place. Put some down a sock, some in that little inside pocket of your jeans, etc.

  • Minimal cash
    - Only carry as much cash as you need for the day, as automatic teller machines are found every few blocks in many cities.

  • Buy rental car insurance!
    - Rental car companies are passing on the risk of damage to stolen vehicles on to the customers in addendums to the normal rental car.

  • Don't advertise your home address
    - Luggage tags should not have your home address on them. Instead fill in with your business address.
  • Don't look like a tourist
    - Do not stop on the street to consult a map or ask for directions. This immediately identifies you as a tourist. Step into a busy business to look at maps or check directions.

  • First floor rooms are not the most secure
    - When checking into a hotel, request a room that is not on the first floor (if possible). Also, while rooms that have sliding doors leading into a pool area are nice, they also increase your risk of being broken into.

  • How do I get back to the hotel?
    - Better safe than sorry: When traveling to an unfamiliar place, especially to another country, keep a business card or matchbook or a piece of paper with your hotel's address and phone number on it. If you do get lost or separated from your group, you can show a cab driver the address and be whisked to your 'home base' safe and sound. This is particularly helpful to those in a foreign country with little to no foreign language skills.

  • Internet to the rescue!
    - Before traveling, scan your documents (passport, travelers, identity and send them to your email address. In case of problem you can print them everywhere in any cyber café in the world.

  • Shhhhhhh - Don't tell!
    - During your trip do not give out information about your destination, valuables or itinerary to people who do not need it - desk clerks, door men, taxi drivers and such.

  • Prepare your child
    - When traveling with your children, always prepare in advance with them whom they should ask for help, if separated, or where to meet. Also, for young children, make each of them a card which states their name, place they are staying, contact phone number, parents' names, medications they are taking, allergies, and what to do if lost. Then, the child should be told to give the card ONLY to a police officer should they become separated.

    Bag
  • Leave your expensive camera behind - Use disposable cameras when traveling to high-crime Countries.
  • Don't stuck without travel insurance?
    - It is recommended to obtain suitable travel insurance.
  • Try to blend in
    - When traveling internationally, learn something about the culture you'll be enjoying and try to blend in. Dress in neutral tones and try not to talk or laugh loudly - it draws unnecessary attention to you. Obvious tourists are obvious targets.
